Level 03 · Learning design framework
Stakes & Autonomy in Learning Design
This framework offers a practical way to map learner motivation along two dimensions: how high the stakes feel, and how much autonomy the learner has. Where someone sits on that map changes everything about what they need from a learning experience.
High stakes with little autonomy calls for safety nets and confidence building. High autonomy with low stakes calls for spark, play, and quick wins. Instead of designing one program for an imaginary average learner, the map surfaces the very different people inside your audience and lets you meet each of them where they are.
Carried forward
Every audience is four audiences. I still draw this map before I build anything, including the way this site keeps a day half and a night half.
